Early Life and Education
Afif Hossain Dhrubo began his cricketing journey as a student of the prestigious Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan, a renowned sports institute that has nurtured some of the biggest names in Bangladeshi cricket, including Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim. Even in his early days, Afif was recognized as a big-hitter, drawing comparisons to the legendary Tamim Iqbal.
Domestic Cricket Success
Afif’s rise to prominence started in domestic cricket. At the age of just 17 years and 72 days, he made history by becoming the youngest bowler to take a T20 five-wicket haul on his debut for Rajshahi Kings in the BPL 2016.
His first-class debut for East Zone in the 2016–17 Bangladesh Cricket League was a testament to his skills, as he scored a century (105 runs) in the first innings and was named the player of the match.
In the 2016–17 Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League, Afif took a memorable hat-trick while playing for Abahani Limited, showcasing his extraordinary bowling abilities.
Under-19 Career
Afif Hossain Dhrubo’s talent was further highlighted during his time with the Bangladesh Under-19 team. He was the vice-captain of the Bangladesh U-19 side for the 2016 Asia Cup. International Debut and Success
Afif made his international debut for the Bangladesh national cricket team in 2018 during a T20I against Sri Lanka. Although his debut didn’t go as planned, it was just the beginning of his international career.
His breakthrough moment came during the 2019–20 Bangladesh Tri-Nation Series against Zimbabwe. In a crucial match, Afif played a match-winning knock of 52 runs off 26 balls, rescuing Bangladesh from a precarious situation.
In February 2020, he made his One Day International (ODI) debut against Zimbabwe. Notably, Afif scored an unbeaten 93* against Afghanistan in February 2022, becoming the highest individual scorer for any Bangladeshi batter in ODI cricket while batting at number 7 or lower.
